| London Street Signs Project |
London is an old place and a new place and a place in between. City
residents have used street names to get from A to B, to pinpoint where the morning paper should be
delivered, and to advertise what shall be found by those who seek. As the centuries tick by, streets
have been named after markets, churches, local celebrities, and builders' mums. An evocative name
may catch the pedestrian's eye for two blinks, but every street name yields possibilities:
What was there?
What could be there?
What should be there?
The
London Street Signs project celebrates London's evolution through its rich
cartographical heritage.
We dress up and stand next to street signs.
